Our Adventure on a Hike

A group of us decided we were up for an adventure last week. So we packed up at 7am to drive to the 2nd highest peak in our country for a hike. We drove up part of the way before we stopped on the side of the road for a picnic breakfast of bread and beans (the most common breakfast food here). We drove up a little further, and than began our hike.... This is the view from the start of our hike.

overlook

Most of the way was not a difficult climb. But once we got to the top, we had to be a little more creative to get us all up without falling down the side of the mountain. This part way okay.... it was the next part I found myself praying that God would help me and allow me to survive another day.

hike

But we made it! The top of the mountain:)

we made it!

After enjoying the view for awhile, we made our way back down the mountain.

This was a house at the end of our climb. I just love this picture. Along with this, we also saw women doing laundry on the rocks, many goats and cows, and national men who were more than eager to help us find our way.

Wanna Barbie Bike?

Pink is generally considered to be a girls color, but where I live... it's a color both boys and girls wear. After my nephew was born, I went to by him some clothes. When I told the worker at the store that I wanted something for a boy, he brought out one pink and one purple outfit. I reminded him that it was for a boy, and he lifted up the pink one saying, "this one would be perfect!"

A few months ago, we started noticing a lot of things that were spray-painted pink here. Finally, we found the place that was responisble for turning everything from walls, to signs, to the front end of cars (not exactly sure why just the front end was done). You can bring pretty much anything to this shop and have it spray-painted pink.

wanna pink bike

But by far, my favorite thing I've seen spray-painted pink was this motorcycle. Talk about awesome! The first time I saw this bike, there were two men riding on it through town. I looked and looked until I found it again so I could share the craziness of this barbie bike with you all!

barbie bike

Not only is it pink, but the hearts and stars too! Would you ever be caught riding this "motorcycle"?

Sports Days

This week was culture days at the local university. Each morning we had a program including different aspects of the American life. Through skits, poetry, music, talks and quizzes, we wanted to bridge the gap between our cultures. It was a fun and exciting time to meet students and share with them how Americans really are not that different from themselves. Even if our lives look different, we all have shared hopes and dreams.

There are some things though that you will never see in this country. American football and baseball are two of those things.

flag football

On the first culture day, a group of American guys gathered together to play a game of flag football. Many of the students came to watch. After the game, we had a time when the national guys could learn how to play too.

baseball

The next day, we had a game of baseball. It was exciting and fun to be outside cheering on the teams! Again, after the game, the national guys had a chance to hit and throw... I have to say they were better at football than baseball

the crowd

The bleachers were filled with students each day to watch the game. We were able to have a lot of good conversations and hope to follow up soon with many of them.

A Picnic and Hike

This past week, we took a trip up north for a little vacation. One day, we drove up the mountains for a picnic lunch and to hike around for awhile. Here are some of the views....

1

Not quite the Grand Canyon... but still very beautiful.

2

After lunch, I went to talk with these cute young boys. After taking their picture, the first question they asked was, "are you a M*slim?" When I told them I followed J*sus, they ran to tell their sisters and friends that I belong to J*sus. I pr*y that they would grow up to know the Truth!

3

A house near our picnic site. This village was so warm and welcoming. One boy, after talking with us for about 2 minutes, invited us into his home for lunch and tea! Unfortunately we were on our way out... maybe another time.

4

As we hiked down the mountain, I looked up to see these homes right on the edge of the cliff. I cannot imagine what the moms are thinking every time their kids go out to play!

5

We didn't have much time to explore, but if I go back, I'll have to go see what's beyond these rocks...

6

Once we got back into town, the sun began to set through the clouds. How awesome is His creation!

The night life during Ramadan

Bekah and I have been having fun this week going out in the the marketplace at all hours of the night (something normally not okay for women to do, as they have to be home by dark during the rest of the year). During Ramadan, women can be out into the early hours of the morning, so Bekah and I have been taking advantage of the extra freedom this month. Here's what we saw tonight....

1

The streets are filled with people selling all sorts of items from wheelbarrows and carts. Pretty much whatever you need, you can find it!

2

From pots and kitchen items to gold bracelets and perfume... you can even buy underwear off the street (not that I ever would).

3

This is the entrance to the old city. I bought pots and a spoon here to make the traditional food for many of you when I come home in a few short months!
